Make your phone number tap-to-call

If a phone can't dial the number on your website, some visitors will leave instead. How to check yours in ten seconds.

Most people looking for a local service find you on their phone. If your number is inside an image, or is plain text without a link, the phone cannot dial it. The visitor has to remember it and type it in, and some will go back to the search results instead.

What tap-to-call means

Tap-to-call is a phone number set up as a link. When someone taps it, their phone's dialer opens with your number already in it. One tap to call you.

Check your own site

Open your website on your phone and tap your phone number. If the dialer opens, you are set. If nothing happens, the number is not linked. Try it on the home page, a service page and the contact page.

Where the number should be

  • At the top of every page, visible without scrolling.
  • On the contact page.
  • In the footer.

How to fix it

Most website builders have a phone button or a way to turn text into a phone link. If someone else built your site, ask them to make the number a tel: link everywhere it appears, and to test it on a real phone. If the number is part of an image, ask them to add it as text instead.

Use one number everywhere

Use the same number on your website and your Google listing. Two different numbers make customers wonder which is right.
