How to report a fake Google review
Flag the review from your Business Profile, pick the reason that matches the policy it breaks, then track the report and appeal once if it is denied.

Short answer
To report a fake Google review, open your Business Profile, select Read reviews, tap the report icon beside the review and send a report with the reason that fits. Google only removes reviews that break its policies, so the reason you pick matters. This applies to any owner or office manager who found a review from someone who never hired you, a competitor, or a person who is making things up.
If you searched "how to report fake google reviews", you want the review gone today. Google decides, not you, and its answer usually takes days. What you control is how clear your report is.
Why Google may not remove a review you think is fake
Google's own help page says you can report any review, but only reviews that violate its policies are eligible for removal. It also says not to report a review just because you disagree with it.
A harsh review from a real customer stays up. A review that is wrong about the facts is not automatically fake. Fake means the content breaks a written policy.
What counts as a fake review under Google's policy
Google's contribution policy lists the kinds of content it removes. These are the ones owners run into most:
- Reviews that are not based on a real experience at your business
- Reviews posted by a competitor, a former employee or someone with a conflict of interest
- Several reviews from multiple accounts by or at the request of one person
- Reviews with links, phone numbers or ads inside them
- Reviews with threats, personal information or profanity used to offend
- Repetitive reviews posting the same content again
If the review does not match one of these, expect it to stay.
How to report fake Google reviews from your Business Profile
Do this from the phone or computer where you manage your profile.
- 1Sign in to the Google account that manages your Business Profile
- 2Open your profile and select Read reviews
- 3Find the review and select the report icon next to it
- 4Choose the reason that matches the policy, such as spam
- 5Select Send report
Pick the most specific reason. Do not report the same review over and over, because the one report is what gets evaluated.
How to check your report and appeal once
Google says evaluation typically takes several days. You can follow it in the Reviews Management Tool.
- 1Open the Reviews Management Tool and confirm the right account
- 2Select your business and continue
- 3Choose the option to check the status of a review you reported
- 4Read the status: Decision pending, Report reviewed with no policy violation, or Escalated
- 5If it says no policy violation, choose Appeal eligible reviews and submit the appeal form
Google's page says the appeal is one time. It also says you get an email with the decision. If the review is not found to violate policy, it stays up.
A calm public reply while you wait
A report does not stop homeowners from reading the review today. A short reply tells them you are a real business that checks its records. Post it once and keep it factual.

Do not accuse the reviewer of lying. Do not name a competitor. Do not offer anything in exchange for the review being changed or removed, because Google's policy bars incentives for revising or removing a review.
Which route to take
Rule of thumb
If you can name the exact policy it breaks, such as a competitor review, a link or a threat, report it and reply. If not, reply with your calm record check and do not report it.
If a real customer left an honest review you dislike, a good reply and new reviews from real customers help more than a report.
What this will not fix
- A review from a real customer who is angry or simply wrong
- A removal date, because Google sets the pace and its page only says several days
- A review that Google decides does not violate policy, after your one appeal
- A competitor who keeps posting, because each review has to be reported on its own
Common questions
Can I pay someone to remove a fake review?
Google reviews are removed by Google. Be careful with anyone who promises removal, and use the report and appeal steps on Google's own pages instead.
Can I report a review from a business owner account?
Yes. Google's help page lists the Business Profile steps and the Reviews Management Tool as two routes. Use whichever lets you sign in to the account that manages your listing.
What if I think the reviewer is a competitor?
Report it under the reason that fits. Google's policy bars posting on a competitor's listing to undermine it, and it also lists conflicts of interest such as industry competitors.
Can I ask the reviewer to take it down?
You can reply and invite them to call, but you cannot offer a discount or any incentive for removing or revising a negative review.
