Why your business is not showing on Google Maps
A profile that is unverified, wrong or thin on details may not appear in local results. Check these four things first, and none of them cost money.

Short answer
Google says a profile may not show up when it is unverified, or when its information is wrong or incomplete. Most owners can find the cause in ten minutes by checking those three things plus how the profile matches the search. This applies to any home service owner asking why is my business not showing on Google Maps.
Why is my business not showing on Google Maps: the cause
Google's help pages say local results are mainly based on relevance, distance and prominence. Relevance is how well your profile matches what someone typed. Distance is how far you are from the person searching.
The same page says that if your business info is not accurate, your profile might not show up for relevant searches in your area. It also says listings with gaps are less likely to appear. A missing category or a wrong address can keep you out of results you should be in.
Check whether the profile is verified
Google says that to show your business on Search, Maps and other Google services, you must add or claim it and then verify it. An unverified profile is the first thing to rule out.
- Sign in to the Google account that owns the profile.
- Search your exact business name on Google while signed in.
- Look for a Verify button or a banner asking you to verify.
- Follow the steps Google offers, which depend on your business.
Google also says that if you move to a new address after verifying, you must verify again. If you changed your address recently, check for that banner too.
How to fix thin or wrong profile details
Google tells owners to fill in address, hours, category and attributes. Each gap is one more reason your profile may be skipped for a search.
- 1Open your profile and compare the business name to your sign, your truck and your invoices.
- 2Check the phone number and website link for typos.
- 3Set one main category that matches the work you want, such as plumber or electrician.
- 4Add your hours, including holiday hours.
- 5Add your services and a short description in plain words.
Here is a description you can adapt. Replace the brackets with your own details.
Copy and use
[Business name] is a family-owned [trade] company serving [town], [town] and [town].
We handle [service], [service] and [service] for homes and small businesses.
Call [phone number] or send a request through our website for a visit.
Use only what is true. Google asks for accurate information, and a claim you cannot back up will not help you.
How to test what customers actually see
A profile can exist and still not show for the search you care about. Test it the way a customer would.
- 1Open Google Maps on your phone and type your trade plus your town.
- 2Search your exact business name and note whether the profile appears.
- 3Search again from a place a few miles away, because distance changes results.
- 4Write down what shows for each search and the date.
If your name finds you but the trade search does not, relevance and distance are the likely gap. Google says prominence also depends on how many websites link to you and how many reviews you have.
How to ask customers to help your profile
Google's page says prominence depends partly on how many reviews you have, and that more reviews and positive ratings can help. You control this one by asking after each job.
- 1Send your review link by text before the truck leaves the street.
- 2Ask every customer the same way, with no reward offered.
- 3Reply to each review in your own words within a few days.
Decide what to fix first
If your profile does not appear even when you search your exact business name, fix verification and your details first. If it appears for your name but not for your trade, add a clear category and services, then ask for more reviews.
There is no shortcut after that. Google's help page says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking on Google.
What this will not fix
- It will not guarantee a spot in the top three results for any search.
- It will not work overnight, because Google decides when changes show.
- It will not help if the problem is a different one, such as a suspended profile.
- It will not replace a steady flow of honest customer reviews.
Common questions
Do I have to verify my profile to show on Google Maps?
Google says you must add or claim your business and verify it to show on Search, Maps and other Google services. Start there if you have never completed it.
Can I pay Google to rank higher on Maps?
Google's help page says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. Anyone who sells a guaranteed spot is selling something Google does not offer.
Why does my profile show for my name but not for my trade?
Google ranks local results on relevance, distance and prominence. Your name matches exactly, while a trade search also depends on your category, your location and your reviews.
Will changing my address affect my listing?
Google says that if you move to a new address after verifying, you must verify your business again. Until that is done, the profile may not show the way it did.
